The Planning and Inspections Department administers activities including general planning, building inspections and code enforcement, zoning, subdivision review, downtown revitalization, nuisance abatement, economic and community development and flood prevention within the City Limits of Whiteville.

Planning and Inspections consists of the City Planner and Building Inspector. Activities involving downtown revitalization are administered by the Whiteville Downtown Development Commission, which is financially supported by the City and other organizations, i.e. Whiteville Chamber of Commerce. The Planning and Inspections Department issues permits, reviews development plans, enforces the City’s Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, and staffs the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment. Whiteville Chamber of Commerce coordinates downtown events and festivals, including the Fire Ant Festival; Red, Whiteville and Blue Event; and Pecan Harvest Festival.
